Imagine and Learn Social & Emotional Awareness

As May is also Mental Health Awareness Month, we thought we’d dedicate week two to Pretend Play! This form of play is important in teaching kids and adults social and emotional awareness. It allows us to step out of our shoes and into another’s for a brief moment of altered perspective. It is also a wonderful opportunity for problem solving and exploring various solutions.

So this week for Play All May, we're celebrating imagination with Pretend Play activities the whole family can enjoy! Want more inspiration for game play? Check out these ideas from The Genius of Play!

And now, for a craft to do at home... DIY playdough!

Last year we fell in love with this playdough recipe from I Heart Naptime, and thought we’d give it another shout out!

Supplies:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour 3/4 cup salt 4 teaspoons cream of tartar 2 cups lukewarm water 2 Tablespoons of vegetable oil (coconut oil works too) Food colouring, optional Quart sized bags or gloves (to prevent the dye from staining your hands)

Step 1: Mix all dry ingredients together in a pot. Step 2: Mix in the water and the oil.

Step 3: Over medium high heat, constantly stir the mixture until a thick dough ball begins to form.

Step 4: Remove the dough from heat and allow to cool slightly.

Step 5: Knead the dough until smooth.

Step 6 (optional): If you opt to add food colouring, divide the dough into balls. Start by adding about five drops of food colouring and knead the dough while wearing gloves or while the dough is in a quart bag. Mix until the colour is evenly distributed. Once the dough is mixed, it’s ready for play!

The cream of tartar will give the dough a bit of an odour, if this is bothersome consider adding a drop of essential oils for improvement. Feel free to also add some glitz with some glitter!

Store the dough in the bags. Keeps for up to 3 months.
