A Second Star Was Born

Second Star to the Right didn’t always have a name and it wasn’t always a sure thing. I started this store as a dream in my head - one I would return to when teaching and micromanaging in the classroom started to weigh me down and make me question if this career was really for me. As my frustrations with teaching and the limitations being put on educators by a standardized system began to build, my dream of opening a children’s bookstore started to feel more and more urgent. It tugged on the back of my mind until I couldn’t ignore it any longer.

After much consideration and careful planning, I left teaching.

Saying goodbye to my classroom and the incredible students I had come to know and love was the hardest part about starting Second Star, but I knew in my heart that this is what I wanted to do, and that I could welcome far more students into my store than I could ever hope to help in my classroom.

Supporting educators has always been an integral part of my business and is a personal passion of mine. School programming is the cornerstone of our bookstore and it doesn’t end at the classroom doors, either! We offer a variety of in-store and virtual programming to help support literacy and foster connections in our community for story lovers of all ages. On the last Friday of every month, our School Liaison welcomes school staff for an Educators’ Night with yummy, book-themed snacks and drinks, book talks and a personalized shopping experience. We even double our usual 15% Educator Discount so you save 30% on all purchases - in store and on e-commerce! You can join us in person (we even have buddy tickets, so you can come with your work best friend!) or watch virtually and enjoy an online shopping experience!

I know how challenging it is to be an educator in “normal” times and can’t imagine the struggles you all have faced over the past two years. I hope you are all proud of your resilience, even though you shouldn’t have to use it. I hope, too, that you are proud of the impact you’ve had and the dedication you’ve shown to educating your students. I know I’m proud of all that you’ve accomplished while facing insurmountable challenges.

We at Second Star want you to know that we are renewing our commitment to bringing quality programming and affordable ordering options to all of the schools in and around Denver. We partner with several local nonprofits and local businesses in our community to help make books and programs available and accessible to all of the amazing schools in our great city and surrounding suburbs - regardless of budgets or funding. Together, we CAN make a difference!

Thank you all for being part of our community and helping us share stories with our schools and all of the amazing people who make up our Second Star family!
